  Philadelphia, United States
To wrap up another successful year, your favorite Philly tech and creative groups are joining forces for one big holiday celebration and we invite you to join us for a festive celebration of local UX and creative professionals! Tickets* are $9 and include your first drink and light refreshments. There will be plenty of time to nosh and network with friends new and old from all of our partner groups. We can't wait to see you there!    Participating Groups: Code for Philly uses tech and data as a mode of civic engagement. Founded under Code for America’s inaugural Brigade Program in 2012, Code for Philly currently hosts a weekly Meetup, regular hackathons and acts as an incubator for civic apps across the city. Some of us are thinkers, designers, makers, and coders, but we’re all engaged citizens ready to make an impact on the place we call home. Philadelphia Area New Media Association (PANMA) is a community of designers, artists, developers, programmers, content strategists, information architects, marketers, and everything in between.   PhillyCHI is the Philadelphia area chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery’s special interest group on human-computer interaction. We are an interdisciplinary group interested in Human-Computer Interaction, User Experience, Usability and Accessibility. We hold monthly events on topics and trends in the industry, providing opportunities for our members to grow, connect, and engage with the local UX community.  Research Rewind is all about reflecting on our experiences as UX and user-centered design researchers so we can refine our craft, iterate on our process, and ultimately create delightful, evidence-based designs that put people first. We host semi-monthly events where we swap stories, share tips and tricks, and grow our research skillsets together. Join us! UX Nights is a safe place where we talk about user experience and how it affects your life and the work you do. Are you a professional, student, or just interested in design? Are you considering switching careers or looking for your next gig? Are you passionate about learning new things and become better at what you do? Do you just want to hang out and talk about design? 2019 Rothberg Catalyzer Design Studio 3: Pitch Success
        15 Oct - 06:00 PM
        Philadelphia, United States
Our Rothberg Catalyzer at Penn workshops, called Design Studios, give you an opportunity to learn from subject matter experts and get an edge on the competition. In Design Studio 3, gear up to wow the judges during the Makerthon Weekend with your best elevator pitch.   Creating a device is only half the battle, the other half is presenting it to stakeholder and investors. Make sure your presentation stands out from the pack. This workshop goes through best practices for engaging your audience during presentations and pitching. Our Rothberg Catalyzer mentors are here to provide insight and offer feedback on your pitch deck.    WORKSHOP LEAD(S)   Vanessa Chan, PhD Professor of Practice, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Materials Science and Engineering Penn School of Engineering and Applied Science     -- Rothberg Catalyzer at Penn Overview   Most people have heard of a hackathon, but the Rothberg Catalyzer at Penn is a makerthon. Instead of the classic hackathon focus on software development, a makerthon is where students compete to build innovative hardware solutions for healthcare problems.  The makerthon portion of the Rothberg Catalyzer at Penn is an immersive two-day event to encourage interdisciplinary student teams to develop a simple prototyping project. Groups come together to address an unmet clinical need by prototyping a hardware solution. At the end of the weekend, projects are presented to a panel of judges and awards are presented. Even if you think that you know nothing about healthcare or innovation, the goal of the makerthon is to create cross-disciplinary teams to build hardware and software solutions. Whether you're trying something new, getting a jumpstart on senior design, or kickstarting your tech startup - you never know what you and your team will come up with!   Apply now! Accepting applications through September 20th. All Penn students are welcome. See our website https://www.catalyzeratpenn.com/ for more details and to apply.
2019 Rothberg Catalyzer Design Studio 2: Rapid Prototyping and Device De-risking
          01 Oct - 06:00 PM
          Philadelphia, United States
Our Rothberg Catalyzer at Penn workshops, called Design Studios, give you an opportunity to learn from subject matter experts and get an edge on the competition. In Design Studio 2, immerse yourself in the know-how of thoughtful prototyping in a short period of time as well as de-risking your health-tech device.   After conceiving a health-tech device concept, there's genuine excitement to create the first prototype. However, premature prototyping can backfire, committing a team early on to a particular path forward without consideration to other potential solutions to the problem. Before plunging into prototyping, consider asking “What are the reasons that my concept won’t work?” This workshop explores and identifies risk factors in order to optimize your prototyping strategy, as well as mentors and lab coordinators to lead you through available resources and safety.    WORKSHOP LEAD(S)   Dustyn Roberts, PhD Senior Lecturer, Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics Penn School of Engineering and Applied Science     -- Rothberg Catalyzer at Penn Overview   Most people have heard of a hackathon, but the Rothberg Catalyzer at Penn is a makerthon. FEMA Sustainability Hackathon
                23 Apr - 08:00 AM
                Philadelphia, United States
If you want to build a culture of preparedness, you need to have practices, systems and guidance that can resonate with people, withstand the test of time and be relevant for future generations. Sustainable practices support ecological, human, and economic health, presumes that resources are finite, and should be used wisely with a view to long-term priorities and consequences. This spring, in honor of Earth Day, FEMA is hosting a Hackathon to explore in-depth the best sustainable approaches to emergency preparedness. Here are the goals: Find best sustainable practices for food, water, shelter, power preparedness & hazard mitigation that will be turned into a suite of well-targeted solutions for individuals and communities to adopt. Take into account accessibility to the broad and inclusive base of stakeholders we have and address the circumstances and challenges different groups of people face, such as low-income families, the aging population, and those with access and functional needs. Emphasize best practices viable beyond the 72hr time period, are renewable, and take into consideration the changing environment. Promote discussion, collaboration and creation of initiatives with other organizations on resilient and sustainable practices in emergency preparedness and hazard mitigation. FEMA Sustainability Hackathon will consist of one full day where subject matter experts, thought leaders and representatives from all levels of government, state extension services, aid agencies, private sector partners, and members of academia come together to discuss and define how best to prepare and conduct mitigation in ways that last and do minimal damage to the earth in the face of the changing environment and escalating natural disasters. This Hackathon, while optional, will be a deep dive in to the details to solve some of our most critical issues surrounding sustainable practices in emergency preparedness and how to make it accessible to people and communities. We are setting the tables, opening the forum and looking for participants and volunteers to feature at this emergency preparedness and mitigation hackathon for social change. If you have expertise in the realm of sustainable food production or storage, gardening, water collection or purification, emergency power generation, renewable power sources, sustainable sheltering, recycling, homesteading, farming, or implementing sustainable solutions in communities, we would love to have you! p.s. Snacks will be provided.
