Infographics for Social Change: A Graphic Ally Hackathon (Evening Session)

Become a Graphic Ally!
Learn how to tell visual data stories to inspire policy change and mobilize information at the grassroots level. In this hands on workshop, we will explore and apply principles of conscious and responsible design to a real world infographic project. Topics covered are as follows: icon drafting, infographic composition, power dynamics in design, data framing, asset vs. deficit mapping, access to information, and grassroots design strategies. Learn how to map out infographic solutions for reaching and activating policy makers, people with resources, low-opportunity communities, and more.
Participants will leave with an actionable list of design strategies, and with experience creating an infographic for a local nonprofit or community group.
Length/Time: 2 hours Please arrive at 5pm for introductions. The formal program will run from 5:30pm-7:30pm. A light dinner will be served.
About the Workshop Leader
Motion Infographic designer Jessica Bellamy, of Louisville Kentucky, tells visual stories using data and personal narratives. As a Design Justice advocate, Jessica started her design career working with nonprofits and community groups to create compelling explainers that break down complex service and policy information.
Jessica graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Louisville (UofL) with degrees in Drawing (BFA), Graphic Design (BFA), Pan African Studies (BA), and a minor in Communication. As a former Neurodevelopmental Science research analyst at UofL, in 2015 Jessica created a business that combines grassroots organizing, research, and information graphics. She named this business GRIDS: The Grassroots Information Design Studio. GRIDS solely works with nonprofits and community groups. Currently, Jessica is an Adobe Creative Resident. She has traveled around the country teaching creatives how to make information graphics in partnership with nonprofits. During this time she also created two Instagram and Youtube series, Designing From The Margins and A Few Ideas. She also created a design tool called the Infographic Wheel. The Infographic Wheel is a handheld volvelle that helps creatives select a visual layout for any dataset.

The Howard University School of Business, Department of Information Systems is proud to present the 4th Annual #BISONHACKS Hackathon beginning on Friday, March 30, 2018 Mapbox in Washington, DC.
#BISONHACKS Hackathon is an event coordinated by the Howard University School of Business (Department of Information Systems) The Hackathon encourage's participants to develop applications and innovations that automate, alert, organize, encourage, and educate. The hackathon is an opportunity for students to come together and bring their innovative ideas to life. In less than 24 hours students working either individually or in a team as large as four can create applications on whatever platform they desire.
We want you to take advantage of every second you can to score some sweet prizes. Are you a hacking novice? No problem. We will be hosting some introductory boot camps to get you up to speed on the basics of building an app, developing a business plan, and a sales pitch. Keep your eyes and ears open, and you'll learn more here in 24 hours than you ever would in school. Hackathons are as much a learning experience as they are a competition.

FAQs
ARE THERE ID REQUIREMENTS OR AN AGE LIMIT TO ENTER THE EVENT?
You must be a college student to participate in the Hackathon. You will be required to show ID when checking in.
WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS TO BE A TECHNICAL OR BUSINESS MENTOR?
We ask that the those functioning as a business or technical mentor would commit to 3-4 hours to assist the participants in either their coding/programming or with detailing their business idea, plan and pitch.
HOW DO I SIGN UP TO BE A MENTOR OR VOLUNTEER?
Reserve a ticket here on the Eventbrite page for the time slot of your choice. You only need to reserve one ticket but, you are welcome to stay as long as you would like!

I DON'T CODE, WHAT ABOUT ME?
You've found the perfect place and time to learn! There will be dedicated events and mentors to ease your way through your first hackathon experience. Please also look at the schedule and plan to attend one of the bootcamps to prepare for the competition.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ATTEND?
Attendance is 100% free, and includes food, drinks, and a Hackathon T-Shirt.
HOW DO TEAMS WORK?
We encourage people to work in teams of up to four. If you can't find a team beforehand, worry not - there will be time to form teams throughout registration.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
All you'll need is a valid college ID, and your laptop + charger.
WHAT CAN I WIN?
Money and stuff. But is that really why you go to hackathons?
WHEN CAN I START WORKING ON MY IDEA?
You are more than welcome to acquire the skills and resources ahead of time, but all code must be written in the 24-hour period at the event location in order to be considered.

[Bison Hacks] BOOTCAMP SERIES: Front-End 101
As a way to prepare for the event, we will be providing several installments that will help cultivate the skills needed to have an amazing experience at our hackathon on March 30-31, 2018 at Mapbox.
Our final workshop will be dedicated on learning about the client-side or interface component of a web application. Through this segment, we will cover the basics of HTML, CSS, Javascript as well as learn about the developer environment. Our speaker will be Zuri Hunter. While studying Computer Information Systems at the illustrious Howard University, Zuri spent about 2 years teaching herself Ruby on Rails using it at Hackathons to expand her knowledge and experience. After her 5th hackathon, Zuri was presented with her first introduction in the tech industry with an opportunity at Human Geo. Outside of building amazing applications, she volunteers heavily with Women Who Code as a Ruby on Rails Lead and Black Girls Code as Technical Lead. For fun, she loves playing video games, billiards and watching American Football.
