Challenge Details

Anthem, Inc. is committed to improving lives and communities. Part of that is addressing social drivers of health, which directly impact the health of a community. The conditions of where people are born, live, learn, work, and play affect a range of health and quality-of-life risks and outcomes. Social drivers of health could include:

  • Availability of resources to meet daily needs (e.g., safe housing and local food markets)
  • Access to educational, economic, and job opportunities
  • Access to health care services
  • Social support
  • Social norms and attitudes (e.g., discrimination, racism, and distrust of government)
  • Socioeconomic conditions (e.g., poverty)
  • Residential segregation
  • Language/Literacy
  • Access to mass media and emerging technologies (e.g., cell phones, the Internet, and social media)

Participants in the Community Health Challenge have the opportunity to apply their innovative, evidence-based solutions to help transform the current state of health literacy, medication adherence, and food insecurity.

Digital Health Literacy
Health Literacy is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand the basic health information needed to make sound health decisions. Targeted Population(s) Individuals with Chronic Conditions Seniors (65+) English for Speakers of Other Languages Issues to Address Digital health literacy solutions will allow for the delivery of multi-media content produced in multiple languages and at various reading levels. Focusing on: Barriers between Healthcare Providers & Patients Language & Educational Barriers Enormous Amount of Online Health-Related Data

Medication Adherence
Medication adherence is a significant national challenge. Each year millions of patients fail to fill their prescriptions or take their medications as prescribed, costing the U.S. healthcare system $100 billion to $290 billion annually. Worse, this lack of adherence is estimated to cause approximately 125,000 deaths and more than 10 percent of hospitalizations per year. Targeted Population(s) Individuals with Chronic Conditions Seniors (65+) Members with Medicaid Issues to Address Digital medication adherence solutions will allow for streamlined medication fulfillment, prescription cost savings, and address behavior modification and forgetfulness. Food Insecurity
10.5% of US households and 35 million Americans experience food insecurity. Those who face food insecurity also face increased risk of chronic disease, negative health outcomes and health disparities. Targeted Population(s) Individuals with Chronic Conditions Seniors (65+) Members with Medicaid Students 18–24 Issues to Address Food Deserts Transportation Nutrition Literacy Dietary Quality Cost of Nutritionally Adequate Whole Foods Ease of Preparation
